First Class US Mail service is now available for items weighing less than 12 oz.  Please inquire!

Policies and Ordering

Shipping

I ship via US Postal Service Priority Mail unless otherwise requested by the customer. First Class US Mail shipping is now available for items weighing less than 12 oz.  This method is slower than Priority but does cost about 25% less.  Items shipped via First Class will be packaged in a Mylar bubble mailer envelope.  Priority service comes with a rigid cardboard box which is more secure for heavier items.

I strongly recommend insurance on all items for the value of purchase.  If you choose to not insure your items I can not be responsible for lost or damaged items.  If you prefer an alternative carrier, please specify this in your order.  I charge actual shipping cost to your address only and do not charge a handling fee.  You may elect to have your pieces wrapped in acid free tissue paper (see Linen Care) for a small additional fee which is based on the size of the item.  Please indicate this on the order form and the cost will be included in your total as a separate charge.

Returns and Exchanges

This is a family owned business and as such we realize that we "are" what we sell. We make every effort to accurately describe and photograph each item in order to help you make an informed buying decision.  Measurements are made and fabrics described with a trained eye and years of experience with vintage textiles.  But we aren't perfect and will gladly accept any item returned within 5 days of receipt, unused and in the same condition in which it was sent, no questions asked.  We will refund the full cost of purchase only, not the original shipping cost, and can not pay for return shipping or insurance (required).  Items purchased with a credit card outside of the PayPal system will be refunded with a company check since we are unable to post refunds directly to a credit account.

If you change your mind about an item and wish to exchange it for another, the same policy applies:  it must be returned (Priority Mail Insured at your expense) within 5 days of receipt, unused and in the same condition in which it was sent.  The full cost of purchase (less original shipping cost) will be applied to the purchase of the other item(s).  Shipping will then be added for the new item.

Age and Condition

Age and Provenance:  Whenever possible I will list the country of origin and the approximate age of the piece using the accepted notation "c" for circa, followed by a year.  With this dating system it is understood that the age of the piece is approximate, give or take ten years on either side of the date mentioned.  So, for example, something listed as c.1900 could well have been produced any time between 1890 and 1910.  Sometimes I am lucky enough to find a piece that has been dated, but that is rare.  If the item bears no clues as to it's age and history I will not make a guess. If I am not certain of the exact time period I will not use this dating system but may make a statement reflecting my best estimate of a greater span of time, such as "early 20th century" or "late 1800's".  If any original written data came with the piece, like a letter or note from the original owner, I will mention it in the description and include it with the item.

Perfect, Mint or Near Perfect Condition:  When an item is described in this way it means that to the best of my knowledge it is spotless and without repairs or obvious flaws.  I do not consider slubs flaws in natural linen, but I do in a fine woven damask, for example.  It does not necessarily mean the item has never been used or washed.  If I believe an item in is new condition and has never been used or washed I will say that in the item description.

"As Found":  When an item is listed "as found" it means that the piece has not been washed or otherwise cleaned by me.  It  may also mean that a spot, hole, repair or significant defect exists in the fabric. These are described and whenever possible, photographed, so that the buyer may make an informed decision regarding purchase. Most lovers of linen find these things to be part of the charm and history of each piece but for the sake of accuracy I try to be very thorough.  I'd rather offer something with a flaw that I believe has historic and aesthetic value and let you decide.  I just can't let these gems go by! Please remember that most of these linens are handmade and are considerably old and thus, more likely to show signs of age and wear.   If you are interested in an "as found" item, please ask questions prior to purchase.
