Embroidered Still Life

I saw this wonderful society silk embroidered picture across the room at an auction and about fell over myself "guarding" it for my own! The silk embroidery is done on natural linen and appears to be in excellent condition, with minor moisture stains in the lower left corner and upper right on the mat. The embroidery is beautifully conceived: a clay vase with cherry blossom branches that spill over the sides is "framed" by cherry branches that are interspersed with blossoms. Just lovely! The work is classic society silk in heavy, layered satin stitches. The taupe mat was amateurishly cut by hand. The heavy gold gilt frame is in good condition with minor gesso loss, see below. The back has it's original paper backing with paper tape and a rusty hanging wire that should be replaced. The antique, wavy and bubbled glass is original to the piece. Oh, soooo Victorian! c.1890 Inside mat edge is 18" square (visible linen area). Outer edge including frame -- 26.5" X 30.5" wide.
