From rural Western North Carolina, an antique needlepoint footstool with a hidden compartment tells the story of a clever maker who sought to protect family treasure from invading cavalry or thieves...a very large nail centered on an inner prop allows the bottom to twist open to reveal a storage place for valuables. The bottom edge is finished as if the needlepoint sides continued under the decorative tacks....but, voila! The feet are scarred from years of use. Black wool needlepoint is padded underneath with straw or grass. Made of pine....fabulous historical piece...offered in excellent condition for age, as found. c.1850's - 70's 12.75" X 9" X 6" high
