Naive embroidered roses antique centerpiece provides insight into the techniques used to produce more refined masterpieces of the society silk style. Was she 8 or 10 or 12 years old?...or younger??
This piece of antique society silk embroidery suggests a new or young embroidress was making her first attempt at learning the subtleties of shading, layering and coloration that are intrinsic to the success of this form of needlework. She included all the elements of the style...the random petal, realistic botanical details like thorns and upturned leaves, and naturalistic colorations but the work is simplistic and unpracticed.
...but like all of us, who are loved by someone even though we are terribly imperfect, this charming piece deserves to be seen and appreciated for the effort it represents...like a momma who tells her baby she is beautiful before she's reached her prime....braces gleaming, chubby cheeks and all. A sad little repair is easily missed, shown below. Freshly laundered and pressed, in otherwise excellent condition. c.1890 - 1910 17.5" round
