Antique linen kitchen towels were embroidered in antiquity with the fashionable stitches and color choice of the day. Turkey red 'fancy work' stitches were all the rage in the later decades of the 19th century. These were likely a simple project for a young girl learning the art of her grandmothers. One with marks and smudges, shown below, can still be used and displayed. These are just so charming...freshly laundered and pressed, in excellent condition, as shown. c.1880 - 1900 17" X 33"
