Vintage and Antique Linens by Em's Heart Antique Rosaline / Cantù Lace Cocktail Napkins Item Number N30305 Tightly woven tendrils swirl to form delicate patterns in this example of antique Rosaline lace. This wonderfully feminine lace style has it's origins in Brussels, Belgium. The methods and patterns used in these laces reflect earlier 18th century Venetian needle laces and constituted a resurgence in the lace making craft in this area. The lace pattern was carried to Cantù Italy where it was widely produced for a very short period of time at the end of the 19th century through about 1910. Because of this, Rosaline and Cantù laces are highly collectable not only for their delicate beauty but also for their rarity. After the occupation of Italy at the start of WWI lace production ceased in Cantù making this style more elusive and sought after. "The lacemakers of Cantù are the sole depository of the technical secrets for its execution. "** Antique Rosaline lace surrounds tiny circles of clear white linen on these antique cocktail napkins / mats. A few loose brides are the only flaws found. Delicately beautiful, creamy white and in excellent condition, freshly laundered and pressed. c.1890 - 1910. 12 mats -- 5.5" round Set of 12 antique Rosaline lace cocktail napkins or coasters $145 set **http://www.italiainvita.it/uk/work/rosaline.shtml -- International Forum of Lace and Embroidery 2nd edition - The Origins Rimini Nord - Bellaria, Italy Antique Lace: Identifying Types and Techniques by Heather Toomer www.schifferbooks.com ISBN 0-7643-1384-3
