Splendid example of Cantù lace surrounds each antique linen napkin in this fabulous old set. Tightly woven tendrils terminate in characteristic little flower buds. This wonderfully feminine lace has it's origins in Brussels, Belgium and was called "Rosaline lace". The methods and patterns used in these laces reflect earlier 18th century Venetian needle laces and constituted a resurgence in the lace making craft in this area. Cantù lace is highly sought after not only for it's delicate beauty but also for it's rarity. After the occupation of Italy at the start of WWI Cantù lace ceased in it's production and was no longer available to the international market. Hand made lace, cutwork, embroidery and crisp white linen come together in these rare antique linen napkins. Hand needlelace from Cantu is made of linen and perfectly white on these heavy linen napkins of superior quality. A splendid cartouche in one corner of each features a lace inset and a wispy play between embroidered and cutwork details.
