Antique French Linen Monogrammed Napkins
"MH" and Numbered in Turkey Red Embroidery
Item Number N52306
Enormous antique French linen damask napkins are monogrammed in one corner of each, "MH" and numbered in turkey red embroidery. Some call napkins this size "lapkins" as they were made large enough to cover the substantial skirts of the 19th century and were usually rectangular in shape. These would definitely qualify as such as each is a full yard wide by over 2.5 feet! If you love the thought that these were once used at a formal French table seated with grandly attired Victorian guests, these will provide you with ample food for your imagination to be sure.
The smallish monogram is dwarfed by the large size of the linen but is beautifully executed in a Victorian script. The vivid hand woven linen damask is creamy white and richly patterned with realistic detail. Flaws consistent with their age are shown below and do not compromise the integrity or usefulness of each piece. Hems are rolled and stitched by hand. They are in otherwise excellent condition and are clean and pressed. c.1860's - 80's 32" X 36"
