There are some things that have to come to represent an era in my mind...Society silk embroidery, so named for the Royal Society of Embroidery that made both the floss and many of the popular patterns, has come to be known as a past time pleasure of wealthy women with time on their hands. This marvelous piece from the Arts and Crafts period depicts a colorful butterfly in flight and represents the geometric influence of the style.
The wonderful pillowtops of the society silk embroidery style are often shabby but this one is in grand shape with it's gimp trim and ticking striped pillow form inside. Ground is an ecru to oatmeal natural cotton. The embroidery is lovely and just dances on the pillow front. Offered in excellent condition, as found. c.1900 - 1920's 16" X 18"
