Antique finest linen lawn pillow shams are fabulously finished with densely gathered ruffles....Fine, whitest linen is drapey and silky to touch. Most seams are stitched by hand with teeny tiny regular stitching that could cause blindness or hysteria if attempted by a modern seamstress....best to buy this rather than risk it, don't you think??
Deep, dense ruffles bring to mind the saucy femininity of Victorian "good girls" with equally overstated petticoats that made a girl feel beautiful even though they were hidden from view. Appropriate for the boudoir, these shams might have instead had their first life 'neath the head of a precious newborn in one of those amazing Victorian wicker prams...imagine! Either way, they were meant to be seen!
Backs are finished with hand sewn button holes and old shell buttons...Sweet hand embroidered monogram, "T" is identical on each. A confection for your eyes and your fingertips...Excellent condition, freshly laundered and pressed. c.1880's - 1920's 17.5" X 25.5" including 2.5" ruffles all around
