Antique Society Silk Embroidered Runner

Item Number R10007

Early antique society silk embroidered linen runner is embellished with Venetian drawn work that is showing it's age.  Despite the wear, shown below, this fabulous piece depicts the earliest form of "society silk" embroidery.  Natural forms were carefully depicted with one dimensional shading using direction of stitching and couching of the embroidery.  Couching refers to a method of padding the form with layers of stitching to create three dimensional contours.

Here we see Petunias, Clover and others embroidered in a balanced but meandering garland in Champaign silk thread.  The center is run with hand drawn work that has been over embroidered with real gold covered thread that has tarnished over the years and shows a wee bit of wear.  Truly a work of art that deserves another life.  Offered as found, in good condition, as shown.  c.1870's - 1880  16" X 66"
