Once upon a time, when doctors made house calls, proper ladies were never seen in or near a bed that was not dressed. Every home home had a sheet "sham" or two to lay across the top of the bed, covering the edge of the everyday linens. When laid there and folded back it looked for all the world like a sheet. Many of these pieces survived and are wonderful to use as valances or to make into pillowcases or bolsters....
This wonderful piece is embroidered with an unusual turkey red and white monogram which is over embroidered with pinecones and posies. The crochet lace is in perfect condition though the machine stitching on the hem is rather unpracticed. Very minor age resisted my photo attempts. Otherwise excellent condition, freshly laundered and pressed. c.1890 - 1920. 120" wide X 36" deep with a 21" turndown. Measurements include lace.
