This unusual Victorian piece was part of a dealer's personal collection. His intent was to have the frame restored (see photo, some gesso and gilding missing) to be hung in his own home. Painted directly on to a pane of milk glass, the actual technique is not terribly practiced, but the composition and coloring are exceptional. Perhaps more extraordinary is the fact that it has survived intact all these years. The backing is paper covered board, held in place by square nails. Early Victorian, pre-civil war? 13" X 17", frame included.
